Why Steps Matter

According to the CDC, most adults should aim to walk 10,000 steps per day, which is about 5 miles. However, some studies suggest that health benefits can be seen with as few as 2,500 steps per day, and that even small increases in steps can be beneficial.

Walking can have many health benefits, including:

  • Improved balance, cognition, heart health, memory, mood, and sleep

  • Increased energy, stamina, insulin sensitivity, longevity, and HDL ("good") cholesterol

  • Lowered blood sugar, blood pressure, and LDL ("bad") cholesterol

  • Reduced risk of certain cancers, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke

  • Strengthened bones
