Make time for Play

Dr. Seuss said it best:

“When he worked, he really worked. But when he played, he really, really played.”

In our always-on world, it’s easy to get stuck in the “work hard” mode and forget how to “play hard” too. We’ve built entire lives around schedules, deadlines, and to-do lists—but when was the last time you felt truly carefree, belly-laughed until your cheeks hurt, or did something just for the joy of it?

As we move through summer—a season made for sunshine, adventure, and slowing down—it’s the perfect time to mindfully shift gears. Play isn’t just for kids. It’s essential for adults, too. Research shows that making space for play and fun can dramatically improve our mental health, relationships, and even our productivity.

If you’re not sure where to start, I highly recommend listening to Episode 532 of the Live Inspired Podcast with Dr. Mike Rucker. He shares how intentionally adding joyful moments into your life can:🌿 Boost your mood and energy🌿 Build deeper, more connected relationships🌿 Make your work more productive (yes—rest fuels better results!) Dr. Rucker even gives practical tips to help busy people (that’s us!) create more space for play and lightness.

So this summer, I invite you to let go of the grind and give yourself permission to play. Swim in the lake, chase the ice cream truck, try a new hobby, or spend an afternoon doing nothing at all.

Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you.

Reflection Prompt: What’s one playful thing you could do this week—just because it sounds fun? Write it down and make it happen.
